Bridging Academia and Practice – My Journey as a Professor of Law

JimN

As I conclude my latest teaching semester at Manipal University Jaipur’s Faculty of Law, I reflect on an incredible experience that brings together academia, practice, and mentorship in a way I never envisioned for my career.

I have always worn multiple hats—attorney, entrepreneur, business leader—but I never saw myself as an academic. When I graduated from Harvard Law School, after eight years in university settings, I was eager to build my career in private practice. I was drawn to the fast-paced world of intellectual property law, advising technology innovators, startups, and global enterprises.

Yet, life has a way of coming full circle.

Becoming a Professor of Law and Chair Professor of Law at Manipal University Jaipur has been an opportunity to blend decades of private practice with the next generation of legal professionals. Teaching LL.M. and Ph.D. students who are eager to make their mark in intellectual property law has been nothing short of inspiring.

Key Highlights from My Teaching Experience

  1. Guiding Future IP Leaders – I’ve had the privilege of teaching LL.M. and Ph.D. students who are not only interested in IP but actively shaping their career paths in it. One of my students shared that she will be focusing her dissertation on Green Technology and IP, a testament to how legal education can spark meaningful exploration.

  2. Exploring Comparative IP Law – Discussing U.S. and Indian intellectual property frameworks has led to thought-provoking classroom discussions on how jurisdictions approach patents, trademarks, and copyrights differently.

  3. Engaging with Faculty Across Disciplines – Intellectual property is not just a legal issue—it intersects with technology, business, and innovation. Collaborating with faculty across departments has reinforced how IP strategy is critical to multiple industries.

  4. Fostering a Love for Learning – Today’s law students are more practical, curious, and critically engaged than ever before. Their hunger for knowledge gives me great optimism about the future of IP law in India and beyond.

Reflections on the Future of Legal Education

The legal profession is evolving, and academic institutions must evolve with it. At Manipal University Jaipur, I have seen firsthand how a commitment to global perspectives and industry expertise shapes students into well-rounded legal professionals.

  • Digital transformation is thriving – Using state-of-the-art digital infrastructure in classrooms demonstrates how Indian universities are embracing modern legal education.

  • Faculty and leadership are forward-thinking – Inviting experts from across the globe ensures that students learn not just from textbooks but from real-world practitioners.

  • A culture of growth and excellence – With a leadership team committed to innovation and attracting top-tier educators, MUJ is well on its way to becoming a center of academic excellence.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Prof Ravinder Rena from the Dublin Institute of Technology, who introduced me to academic social responsibility. This philosophy deeply resonates with me. As professionals, we don’t just advance our careers; we shape the next generation, contribute to institutions, and leave the industry stronger than we found it.

Gratitude

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Prof.(Dr.) Bharti KumarSonu AgarwalDr. Sony KulshresthaUpasna Rana, and Dr. MARYAM ISHRAT BEG, as well as the Faculty of Law at Manipal University Jaipur, for their warm hospitality and dedication to advancing legal education.

Finally, I thank the MUJ Guest House staff for their kindness and world-class service. They made my time here seamless, ensuring faculty like myself feel at home while teaching.

I look forward to continuing this journey—where academia and legal practice meet to build the next generation of intellectual property leaders.
